Smile Design

Dental problems that hinder a beautiful smile negatively affect social life. When it comes to aesthetic dentistry, the first thing that comes to mind is smile design, a multidisciplinary approach. This dental treatment, also known as smile aesthetics, corrects formal and some visual defects. Thus, it allows the person to achieve the dental structure they envision. While the application is done in a way that is suitable and natural for the individual, a unique smile can be designed thanks to the combination of medicine and art.

What is Smile Design?

Smile design, a holistic approach, is a dental aesthetics application that has become trendy in recent years. It is applied to create an aesthetically pleasing smile and is also known as a ‘Hollywood smile’ or ‘smile aesthetics’. In this procedure, the individual’s needs are first determined based on their dental and oral structure. Then, the necessary procedures are planned. This allows for the planning of dental treatments required to achieve the desired smile. These generally include implants, veneers, or other dental applications.

In smile aesthetics, many factors are considered, from lip color and skin tone to facial features and nasal structure. Existing oral and dental problems are identified, and a treatment plan is developed to address them. For example, implants are used to replace missing teeth. In addition, gingivectomy, a gum aesthetic procedure, can be performed if necessary. Implants and dental veneers give teeth a whiter appearance. Orthodontic treatments are also sometimes required.

Processes Performed Within the Scope of Smile Design

Unlike classic treatment methods such as tooth extraction and fillings, smile design is an application performed based on aesthetic concerns. It aims to treat dental and oral problems that bother the person for various reasons. Thus, it enables the person to achieve the smile they aim for and dream of. While many procedures can be performed within smile design, the most frequently applied ones are generally as follows;
  • Treatments that make the face look healthier and younger
  • Treatment of problems such as infection, gum disease and decayed teeth
  • Procedures to improve the harmony of the smile with the lip contours
  • Dental veneers
  • Treatments to strengthen teeth
  • Studies to bring the gum and tooth ratio to perfect levels
  • Treatments to ensure that the front teeth are the same width and height
  • Correction of misaligned teeth
  • Teeth whitening

Smile design, shaped according to the current conditions and the person’s demands, is applied by bringing together common points around aesthetic parameters. It beautifies the person’s smile through one or more procedures.

What are the advantages of smile design?

There are things that need to be done and determined before a personalized smile design. Because it is essential that both parties agree on the procedures. First, a dental examination is performed. In this way, problems in the teeth and gums are identified. In addition, if there are cavities, they are treated and thus the person is ready for the smile aesthetics procedure. Afterwards, the smile is planned as previously decided.

Before the treatment, videos and photos of the person are taken. In the same appointment, measurements of the person’s upper and lower jaws are also taken. With these images transferred to a digital environment, studies are prepared on how the person’s desired smile will look on them. In the second appointment, silicone molds are placed on the person’s teeth with an application called a mock-up, using the images and measurements taken. These trials are also recorded to obtain the best possible smile design.

Throughout this process, the patient is informed about the procedures that need to be done. Alternative procedures are also explained, if any. Ultimately, the treatment is carried out with the mutual agreement of both parties. All treatments are recorded and digitized. Thus, the desired smile is usually achieved in 3 sessions. However, depending on the nature of the procedures and the desired outcome, it may take longer.

How to Achieve a Successful Smile Aesthetic?

There are golden rules that make smile design successful. First of all, this treatment method, which focuses on the satisfaction of the person, aims to eliminate all dental problems that spoil aesthetics. Although it eliminates basic dental problems, its main purpose is to address aesthetic concerns. The naturalness of the smile is ensured by its suitability to the individual’s face shape, and this is among the primary criteria for success.

There are other criteria that a successful smile design must meet. The alignment of the teeth must be appropriate to the person’s age, facial features, lip structure, gender, and overall appearance. For example, age-related tooth wear and gum sagging can occur. In such a case, the specialist needs to apply appropriate treatment. Furthermore, tooth structures vary according to gender. It is essential for the specialist to choose a technique appropriate to the individual’s gender to achieve an impressive smile.

How Many Sessions Does Smile Design Take?

With this dental treatment technique, the smile achieved is exactly the same as what the person desires. Generally, there is no deviation in the work, so people are satisfied. Thus, once the procedure is completed, it does not need to be repeated. Those who want to make a change that makes their smile attractive with smile aesthetics have only one question in mind. This is whether the smile they obtain after the treatment is permanent.

The smile obtained by applying many different dental treatments together is generally permanent. However, people need to take utmost care of their oral and dental hygiene after this treatment. Generally, having this treatment done once is sufficient. Therefore, the person should not worry about whether the form of their smile has been distorted. There is no need for them to go back to the specialist and have regular check-ups for this issue.

Appearance After Smile Design

After smile aesthetics, the person achieves the criteria required for a beautiful smile. The person gains the look they dreamed of, and their anxieties about this end. Therefore, self-confidence increases. They achieve a smile that is generally considered aesthetically perfect by experts. Thus, they reach the criteria considered the golden rule for a beautiful smile. These criteria are generally as follows:

  • Teeth acquire a bright appearance.
  • Teeth become stain-free and naturally shiny.
  • Facial and tooth alignment becomes harmonious.
  • Missing teeth, if any, are completed.
  • Gums and lips become harmonious.
  • Upper front teeth have a more prominent appearance compared to the others.
  • The alignment of upper and lower teeth becomes harmonious.
  • All teeth are properly aligned.
  • All teeth and gums appear healthy.

The results obtained in smile design, or in other words, smile aesthetics, are the same as planned. When the session is complete, the person’s dental health and aesthetic desires are as they should be for a perfect smile. When performed by an expert aesthetic dentist, it is long-lasting and satisfactory for the individual.
